Oculus Air Link: The Ultimate Guide to Wireless PC VR Gaming

Users must download the Meta Link Application (v53 or above) for their Windows PC & ensure their Meta Quest 2/Meta Quest Pro Headset is on the latest software update. See the link below to download the newest PC Application.

The Air Bridge wireless adapter is a Meta Quest accessory built by D-Link. It enables users to connect their standalone headsets directly to their PC via a high-throughput and low-latency dedicated point-to-point WiFi link.

I wanted to ask if by any chance someone knows what is the internet requirement for oculus air link since I live in Central America so I don't have a really good internet. My current downsload speed is 3.5mb/s (30 mb).

I currently have an oculus rift and I really like it, I was about to spend almost 200 bucks to make it "wireless" by putting all the cables at the top of my room. But I was wondering if I should buy an oculus quest 2 instead so I can use it wireless literally.

Recently i got a new pc and running it with cable is fine, but when i use air link the screen is split, the top part is displayed a little distorted and the bottom isn't displayed at all. I've tried to reset the meta quest 2 but that didn't do anything. The start menu displays well with no problems so it's just the air link. I don't know what the cause of this is since my pc meets the requirements but i do have another bug with the date, it appears as Feb 8, 2037. Along with this it creates connection issues and the internet says limited connection, this however has been there for a while and since i used air link it didn't disturb much.

If the issue still persists after trying this, please gather your oculus logs and send it over to our Online Support Team so that they can take a deeper look into the specific cause of this issue. Here's how you can find your logs:

Mine was doing that so I went into settings on the headset and wrote in search bar "update" and there was a software update available, after installing that ("downloading" takes a good few minutes) air link worked fine for me.

Good to know, thanks for sharing this. Good to know that a factory reset is not always necessary. I've also found a fix with both Link and Air Link is to download the Oculus Desktop PC app from the meta support website and run a Repair. This can also fix a lot of problems. Thanks again and cheers..

I checked that my PC is compatible with the quest 2, and I've tried everything from updating windows 11 and updating my graphics drivers. I've reinstalled the oculus app, and restarted both the headset and my computer multiple times. And I know that both my PC and headset are connected to the same wifi.

When I try to connect via air link, I see the 3 dots of despair inside a black screen, then it just disconnects my headset from the oculus app. And when I try to use the cable, my headset won't even recognize it's connected to the PC (I don't think it's the cable itself even though it's not the official oculus cable because the same cable works just fine for a friend of mine).

It turns out my silly brain didn't realize that the link cable can't be connected to the USB-C port where the battery is in the back of the headset. It has to be directly plugged in to the side of the headset for it to be recognized by the oculus app (and even then, it can't be through a Bluetooth attachment).

My friends suggested that maybe the air link keeps crashing when I try to launch it because my router isn't close enough? What do you think @MetaQuestSupport ? And please if you can clarify your instructions, thanks!

We are happy to know that the link cable is working fine. We all make mistakes like that, sometimes it takes taking a step back to really understand what to do. Now for Air Link, we do recommend that your router be in the same room or at least very close to your headset and PC. If you could move your router, that would be perfect to seeing if that was the problem.

Hi! Unfortunately, the air link still isn't working, but I ordered a wifi extender to see if that might help since I can't move the router. If it works, I'll let you know! For now, I'm settling for the link cable.

Well at least we were able to get the link cable to work. Hopefully by you getting that WiFi extender, that will do some justice to get Air Link up and working. We look forward to hearing back from you soon with updates!

The Oculus Quest 2 (now branded simply as "Quest 2" under its parent company, Meta) is a versatile virtual reality headset. While it is a self-contained device that doesn't require a wired connection to a computer to play the extensive library of Quest VR games, the Quest 2 also offers the option to connect to a computer so you can play Steam VR games, for example. There are two ways to play Steam games on the Quest 2 headset: with a USB link cable or wirelessly with Oculus's Air Link software.

For those looking to use a hardwired connection, the Oculus Link is available for purchase. On the official website, players can purchase this connection cable for $79. The Oculus Link is a cable optimized for completing and maintaining the connection between a Quest 2 and a PC. However, players that don't want to spend money on the wired connection can simply use the Air Link feature on their PC and Quest 2 to access and download more games.

Players will need a Windows PC in order to use the Air Link function for the Quest 2. Unfortunately, Mac does not support the Quest 2 Link app, which is needed to complete both the wired and wireless connections. Players can visit the Oculus website and download the Link software by going to the setup tab and clicking 'Download Quest 2 PC App' under the Air Link and Link Cable heading. Once the download is complete, the headset can be connected to a PC.

As of May 2020, thanks to Oculus' latest update, you can use a plain USB 2.0 cable as well - including the official cable that already ships with the Oculus Quest. The separate purchase of the official link cable is therefore no longer necessary, unless you really need 6 more feet of cable for your needs.

The capabilities of the Oculus Link have been made even more accessible now that you can use a standard USB 2.0 cable - including the one that ships with the Quest. It was already a great compromise between mobile and PC VR, and the Oculus Link now comfortably links the gap between the Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift.

Until recently your Oculus Quest / Quest 2 had to be connected to the PC/Laptop via a link cable to play PCVR games or to test Unity scenes. But now with the beta feature called Air Link, we can play or test games/projects wireless on the headset. So let's see how that's done.

Also, this procedure is almost the same for playing PCVR games on Oculus without a link cable. After launching Steam VR, you can press the Menu button on the left controller to open the steam library and you can choose the game you want to play.

*NOTE* A Wired connection allows for a stable connection to the PC and is not dependent on your internal home network setup. This is the EASIEST PC VR option to get going. You are limited by the cable/wires though, so some users will prefer a wireless option which is possible via Airlink or Virtual Desktop.

Virtual desktop is a paid software that makes connecting your Quest 2 headset to your PC somewhat easier. It also allows you to tweak the settings and perhaps (as reported by many) get better results than the free Airlink option.

Whichever Oculus Quest you use, make sure to buy the correct Oculus Quest version of Virtual Desktop, which can be found on the Oculus Store and is linked above. The Steam and Oculus Rift versions of Virtual Desktop won't do the same thing. Once you've purchased that, put your Oculus Quest on and get Virtual Desktop installed:

The option to enable Oculus Air Link should automatically appear if your Oculus Quest 2 is at least on software version 28. If you still don't see the option to enable Oculus Air link, here's how to enable Oculus Air Link an alternative way.

5. Click Download App (Sideload). It will download and install. A status bar will quickly show when it has finished but then disappear. In our case, the process took less than 10 seconds.

1. Download and install the Forge Mod Loader (client), preferably the latest version. You will need to have the Java runtime library installed, which you do if you already have run any mods on Minecraft Java edition. Be careful because there may be a pop-up ad that tries to fool you into downloading malware. If you get the ad, wait until the skip button appears and click "skip."

That doesn't stop at the Meta app, either. Here's how to play Steam games using Meta Quest 2. The Meta Quest 2 doesn't make it clear that it can play Steam games, but it's a feature in the headset. Luckily, one of the VR headset's best innovations makes this easier than on the original Meta Quest, allowing it to link to a PC wirelessly and play a user's library of games.

Installing the official Oculus PC app will enable Oculus Link and let you use your headset to play PCVR games. The download link for Air Link and Link Cable is available here. If you wish to use Oculus Link to access any of that content, be sure to download Steam and set up SteamVR.
